Creating your first composition

How to add a new composition to MRP and work through the guided setup wizard.

Last updated August 22, 2026

Adding a composition

From My Catalog, choose Start Guided Song Setup → and enter the composition title. MRP creates a Passport for that work and takes you into Guided Song Setup. If a title appears to match an existing work, review the duplicate warning before choosing Create anyway.

The setup wizard

Guided Song Setup follows the Passport in a clear order. The action prompts and Ready to Lock checks show which information is still required for your particular composition; the later information also improves the record and supports recording workflows:

  • Step 1 — Setup: choose a single song or Set Up as a Batch
  • Step 2 — Writers: add the writers and their creative roles
  • Step 3 — Writer Shares: make sure all writer percentages total 100%
  • Step 4 — Publishing: select self-published / no publisher, I have a publisher, or unpublished for each writer
  • Step 5 — Other Writers / Invitations: invite collaborators to confirm their own proposal
  • Step 6 — Composition Details: work classification, title, lyrics/language, genre, duration, and related details
  • Step 7 — PRO Registration: complete the PRO and registration-readiness information
  • Step 8 — Audio Links: links to reference recordings (recommended)
  • Step 9 — Documents: upload relevant files (recommended)
  • Step 10 — Recording Information: ISRCs and recording details
  • Step 11 — Passport Approval
  • Step 12 — Review

Save and continue later

MRP checks several conditions before a composition can be locked. You do not need to complete everything in one session — your progress is saved automatically and you can return to any step at any time.

Solo vs. collaborative compositions

If you are the sole writer, record a 100% writer share and answer the publishing question for yourself. If you have collaborators, add each writer with their role and proposed share, then use the invitation stage to ask them to review and confirm their own proposal.

What comes next

Use the Passport prompts and Ready to Lock checks to resolve outstanding rights information. Locking captures the eligible confirmed evidence and generates the MRP Split Sheet. Registration authorization happens after locking and is tracked separately from your Passport Score.
