Compositions and recordings

In music rights, a composition (the musical work — melody and lyrics) is distinct from a recording (a specific audio production of that work). A single composition can have many recordings: the original studio version, a live version, a cover by another artist, a remix, or an alternate mix. MRP stores these as separate recording entries all linked to the same composition.

Ways to add recordings now

MRP recording creation and catalog import are available now. Choose the route that matches the information you have:

• Guided Song Setup → Recording Information — add a recording while setting up a composition. When you save recording information, the linked recording appears automatically in My Recordings.
• Add one recording — from Recordings / Master Rights, create one standalone sound recording manually and optionally link it to an existing composition.
• Album Batch Setup — add multiple recordings that share album, label, release, or master/rightsholder information.
• CSV catalog import — download the current MRP Sound Recording CSV template and import a larger recording catalog into MRP.

What you need to create a recording

A recording can be created with basic information and completed later. Performing Artist is required; Recording Title defaults to the linked Composition Title when left blank. ISRC, Release Date, Record Label, Master / Sound Recording Owner, ownership percentage, and the composition link are optional when you first add the recording.

My Recordings and Managed Catalogs

My Recordings is your personal recording area. Recordings saved through Guided Song Setup → Recording Information or Add one recording use your personal catalog; recordings linked to compositions you own can also be shown there for reference. Album Batch Setup and CSV catalog import create reusable Managed Catalogs, including your own named label or album catalog and publisher or label catalogs you are authorized to access. A personal My Recordings container is not presented as a professional Managed Catalog.

Creating a recording is not confirming master ownership

Composition ownership and recording/master ownership are separate. You can save recording metadata now and return later to complete or confirm master-rights details. Do not use a composition split or a label name to assume who owns the sound recording.

Audio links

In addition to recording metadata, MRP includes an Audio Links section where you can attach direct links to audio files: a master audio file, an instrumental version, and individual stems. These are reference links for your own use and for collaborators — they are not uploaded to MRP's storage but linked from wherever the files are hosted.
