What the Split Sheet is
The MRP Split Sheet is a PDF document that records the confirmed rights information for a composition at the moment it was locked. It is a snapshot — it reflects exactly what was agreed and confirmed at that point in time. The Split Sheet is generated automatically by MRP when you lock a composition; you do not create it manually.
What it contains
Every MRP Split Sheet includes:
- Composition title and MRP Passport number
- Date the Split Sheet was generated
- A writers table — each writer's legal name, IPI / CAE number, PRO affiliation, and writer share percentage
- A publishers table — each publisher's name, IPI number, PRO affiliation, and publisher share percentage (omitted if no writers have external publishers)
- An approvals section — each party's name, email address, and the date they confirmed their share
Not a copyright registration
The MRP Split Sheet documents the rights arrangement agreed to by the composition's contributors. It is not a legal copyright registration, and it does not create or transfer copyright ownership. Copyright in an original musical work exists automatically from the moment it is created. The Split Sheet is useful evidence of the agreed split between collaborators, but it is not a substitute for legal advice or for registration with a copyright office.
Where to find the Split Sheet
Once generated, the Split Sheet is stored permanently in the composition's Files & Documents section. You can download or share it from there at any time. The file is named with the composition title and the date of generation.
Who receives a copy
When a composition is locked, MRP automatically emails the Split Sheet to all collaborators who have an email address on file — including the composition creator and every confirmed co-writer. If a collaborator's email was added after locking, or if the initial delivery failed, you can resend the Split Sheet from the Files & Documents section.
The Split Sheet is a snapshot
Because the Split Sheet captures confirmed rights information at the moment of locking, it will not update automatically if the composition is later amended. If a composition is unlocked via an amendment and then re-locked, a new Split Sheet is generated reflecting the updated confirmed information.
