Document categories explained

Every file in MRP's Files & Documents section must have a category. Here is what each category is for so you can keep your composition's documents organised.

Why categories matter

Categories make it easier to find specific documents when a composition accumulates many files over time. They also help collaborators and publishers understand what each file is at a glance. MRP will suggest a category automatically based on the filename when it recognises common patterns — you can always change the suggestion before saving.

Creative and musical documents

The following categories cover the creative materials for the composition:

  • Lyrics — the words of the song, in any format
  • Lead Sheet — a notated version of the composition showing melody, chords, and lyrics
  • Artwork — cover art, promotional images, or other visual assets associated with the composition

Rights and agreement documents

These categories cover the legal and rights-management side of the composition:

  • Split Sheet — a document recording the agreed writer and publisher shares (MRP generates one automatically at locking)
  • Signed Agreements — any agreement that has been executed by all parties — co-writing agreements, work-for-hire contracts, and similar
  • Publishing Agreement — a specific agreement between a writer and a publisher
  • Licence — a licence granted for use of the composition or recording
  • Amendment — a document recording a change to a previously agreed arrangement

Registration documents

These categories are for documentation related to registration with rights organisations:

  • PRO Registration — confirmation receipts, registration submissions, or correspondence with a Performing Rights Organisation
  • Copyright Registration — copyright office filings or confirmation letters

Other

Use the Other category for any file that does not fit the categories above. You can re-categorise a file at any time by clicking the category label on the file card and selecting a new category from the dropdown.
